ผมมองว่า Talk วันนี้เกี่ยวข้องอย่างมากกับปัญหาหนึ่งที่คนไทยกำลังเผชิญ นั่นคือ การใช้อคติในการรับข้อมูลข่าวสาร คำว่า อคติ ในที่นี้ไม่ได้แปลว่าสิ่งไม่ดี แต่หมายถึงการที่เราเอาใจที่ไม่เป็นกลางเข้าไปตัดสิน สนับสนุน หรือคัดค้าน ข้อมูลที่มีหรือข่าวสารที่เราได้รับ ตัวอย่างเช่น ถ้าเราชื่นชมคน ๆ หนึ่งมาก ๆ แบบนับถือเป็นไอดอล ทำตามแบบอย่างเขาทุกอย่าง แล้ววันหนึ่งมีคนมาบอกเราว่า จริง ๆ แล้วเขาไม่ใช่คนดีอย่างที่เราคิด เขาคดโกง เอาเปรียบคนอื่นมากมายกว่าจะมาถึงจุดนี้ แน่นอนครับ ปฏิกริยาต่อข้อมูลนี้ของคนส่วนใหญ่ ก็คือต่อต้านแน่นอน จะยอมให้ใครมาด่าไอดอลของเราได้ไง เราจะพยายามหาข้อมูลทุกอย่างมาหักล้างข้อกล่าวหาเหล่านั้น ในทางกลับกัน ถ้ามีคนมาเล่าเรื่องดี ๆ ของคน ๆ นี้ให้เราฟัง เราก็จะเชื่อแทบจะทันที โดยไม่พิจารณาความน่าเชื่อถือของข้อมูลแต่อย่างใด Julia Galef Speaker ของเราในวันนี้จะมาอธิบายถึงปรากฏการณ์นี้ให้ฟัง แถมด้วยข้อเสนอแนะเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ ที่ช่วยให้เรามองโลกตามความเป็นจริงมากขึ้น ลองไปดูกันเลยครับ

คำศัพท์ที่น่าสนใจ

  1. ingrained (adj) ถ้าใช้กับคราบสกปรก เช่น ingrained dirt ก็คือคราบที่ติดแน่น ฝังลึก ซักออกยาก (ลงไปถึง grain เลย) ถ้าใช้กับความคิด นิสัย หรือทัศนคติ ก็จะหมายถึง สิ่งที่ฝังรากลึกลงไปแล้ว เปลี่ยนแปลงได้ยาก

  2. metaphor (n) แปลว่า คำอุปมา คำเปรียบเทียบ

  3. innocuous (adj) แปลว่า ไม่มีพิษมีภัย ไม่เป็นอันตราย รากศัพท์เดียวกับคำว่า innocent ครับ

    To illustrate these mindsets in action, I’m going to take you back to 19th-century France, where this innocuous-looking piece of paper launched one of the biggest political scandals in history.

  4. sterling (adj) แปลว่า ดี ยอดเยี่ยม เชื่อถือได้ pound-sterling ก็คือหน่วยเงินอังกฤษที่อ้างอิงจากโลหะเงินบริสุทธิ์ที่มีมาตรฐาน

    He had a sterling record, no past history of wrongdoing, no motive as far as they could tell.

  5. espionage (n) แปลว่า การจารกรรม การปล้นเอาข้อมูลของฝ่ายศัตรูมา คนที่ทำหน้าที่นี้ก็คือ spy นั่นเอง

    They went and searched Dreyfus’s apartment, looking for any signs of espionage. They went through his files, and they didn’t find anything.

  6. sneaky (adj) แปลว่า ทำตัวลับ ๆ ล่อ ๆ ไม่น่าไว้วางใจ

    This just convinced them more that Dreyfus was not only guilty, but sneaky as well, because clearly he had hidden all of the evidence before they had managed to get to it.

  7. conspire (v) แปลว่า สมรู้ร่วมคิด ร่วมกันวางแผนการลับ

    They talked to his teachers, they found that he had studied foreign languages in school, which clearly showed a desire to conspire with foreign governments later in life.

  8. insignia (n) แปลว่า ตราประจำตำแหน่ง เหรียญตรา เครื่องหมาย เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ สังเกตรากศัพท์ตรงกลางคือคำว่า sign ที่แปลว่าสัญลักษณ์นั่นเองครับ

    Afterwards, they took him out into this public square and ritualistically tore his insignia from his uniform and broke his sword in two.

  9. aptly (adv) แปลว่า อย่างเหมาะสม

    And they sentenced him to life imprisonment on the aptly named Devil’s Island, which is this barren rock off the coast of South America.

  10. foul (n) แปลว่า การทำผิดกฎกติกา หรือสิ่งสกปรก อ่านว่า ฟาวล์ ที่เราเรียกฟาว ๆ ในกีฬาฟุตบอลก็คือคำนี้แหละครับ

    But if he judges that the other team committed a foul — awesome! That’s a good call, let’s not examine it too closely.
