ขอโทษเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่หายไปนานมากกกกกกครับ เนื่องด้วยมีโปรเจคและงานต้องทำเป็นจำนวนมาก ครั้งนี้เลยถือโอกาสมาสะสางและผมจะตามเก็บ post ที่ค้างไว้ ให้ครบทุกสัปดาห์เหมือนเดิมครับ สำหรับวันนี้มาพร้อมกับ 2 คลิปสั้น ๆ อีกครั้งนะครับ

คลิปแรก พูดถึงเรื่อง zodiac ของจีน ถ้าพูดถึง zodiac ในตอนแรกเราอาจจะนึกถึงราศีมังกร กุมภ์ มีน เมษ … แต่ zodiac ที่ ShaoLan พูดในคลิปนี้หมายถึง Chinese Zodiac หรือความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับนักษัตรทั้ง 12 ที่เริ่มต้นมาจากชาวจีนนั่นเองครับ ทั้ง ๆ ที่เรื่องนี้เป็นแค่ความเชื่อ และดูเหมือนว่าจะไม่ได้สำคัญอะไร แต่อย่าลืมว่าความเชื่อนี้เกิดขึ้นกับประเทศจีนซึ่งมีประชากรมากที่สุดในโลก และนั่นก็ส่งผลกระทบกับความเป็นไปของทั้งคนจีนเองและของโลกเราด้วย จะเป็นอย่างไรนั้น ไปติดตามชมครับ

สำหรับคลิปที่สอง Asha de Vos นักอนุรักษ์ปลาวาฬ ได้มาชี้ให้เห็นจุดประสงค์สำคัญที่ทำให้เหล่านักอนุรักษ์ต้องออกมาปกป้อง Northern Indian Ocean blue whales คนทั่วไปอาจนึกว่าพวกเขาออกมาปกป้องเพราะชอบในความมีเสน่ห์หรือความสง่างามของมัน แต่จริง ๆ แล้ว มันมีความสำคัญต่อระบบนิเวศทางทะเลเป็นอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งจากอุจจาระของมัน จะเป็นอย่างไรนั้น เชิญรับชมครับ


คำศัพท์ที่น่าสนใจจากคลิปที่ 1

  1. constellation (n) แปลว่า กลุ่มดาว คำนี้จำได้ว่าเคยนำเสนอไปแล้ว แต่อาจจะยังจำกันไม่ได้ เลยนำมาอีกรอบครับ stell แปลว่า ดาว, con คือ ร่วมกัน, constellation จึงกลายเป็นกลุ่มดาวนั่นเอง

  2. Cesarean sections (n) แปลว่า การผ่าท้องทำคลอดครับ นักวิชาการบางคนสันนิษฐานว่า เราเรียกการผ่าคลอดว่า Cesarean sections ตามวิธีการที่จักรพรรดิจูเลียต ซีซาร์ ประสูติออกมานั่นเอง แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังไม่มีหลักฐานยืนยันแน่ชัดในเรื่องนี้ครับ

  3. temperament (n) แปลว่า อารมณ์ นิสัย ภาวะจิตใจ หรือความหุนหันพลันแล่น

    Tiger is another undesirable animal, due to its volatile temperament. Many Chinese regions saw a sharp decline of birthrate during those years.

  4. riot (n) ถ้าในความหมายทางการ จะแปลว่า การก่อจลาจล หรือ ความสำมะเลเทเมา แต่ในความหมายไม่ทางการอาจแปลว่าคนที่สนุกสนานก็ได้ครับ

  5. mischievous (adj) แปลว่า ซุกซน หรือเป็นตัวป่วน มักใช้อธิบายนิสัยของเด็ก ๆ

    Are there any Monkeys here? 2016 is the Year of the Monkey. Monkeys are clever, curious, creative and mischievous.

  1. poop (v) แปลว่า ถ่ายอุจจาระ แต่ถ้าพูดถึงอุจจาระเฉย ๆ จะใช้แค่ poo

    This whale pump, as it’s called, actually brings essential limiting nutrients from the depths to the surface waters where they stimulate the growth of phytoplankton, which forms the base of all marine food chains. So really, having more whales in the oceans pooping is really beneficial to the entire ecosystem.

  2. detritus (n) แปลว่า ของเสีย หรือเศษซาก
  3. carcass (n) แปลว่า ซากศพ หรือซากสัตว์

    Whale carcasses are some of the largest form of detritus to fall from the ocean’s surface, and they’re called whale fall.

  4. disservice (n) แปลว่า การก่อความเสียหาย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งกับความคิด

    Unfortunately, many people still think that whale conservationists like myself do what we do only because these creatures are charismatic and beautiful. This is actually a disservice, because whales are ecosystem engineers.

  5. entangle (v) แปลว่า ทำให้ยุ่งเหยิง ทำให้พัวพัน entangled ในที่นี้จึงแปลว่าติดอยู่ในตาข่ายหาปลานั่นเองครับ

    Amongst other things, we need to stop them from getting plowed down by container ships when they’re in their feeding areas, and stop them from getting entangled in fishing nets as they float around in the ocean.
