ขออภัยที่สัปดาห์นี้มาช้านะครับ เพิ่มผ่านศึกหนักคือการสอบ TOEFL ไป รอลุ้นผลอีกสองสัปดาห์ครับผม วันนี้มาพร้อมกับสองคลิป ยาวหนึ่ง สั้นหนึ่งครับ

คลิปแรก พูดถึงวิทยาการด้าน Neuroscience หรือวิทยาศาสตร์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ Neuron หรือก็คือเซลล์ประสาทของคนเราที่ใช้ในการส่งสัญญาณต่าง ๆ ไปทั่วร่างกาย Speaker ของเรา Moran Cerf Neuroscientist เป็นผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์กับสำนักข่าว BBC ไปอย่างไม่ได้ตั้งใจว่า “การบันทึกความฝันเป็นสิ่งที่เป็นไปได้ (ในทางทฤษฎี)” และเรื่องราวของเขาก็เป็นข่าวดังไประยะหนึ่ง จนในที่สุด เขาและทีมก็หันกลับมาไล่ตามความเป็นไปได้นี้อีกครั้ง เรามาดูกันว่าหลังจากเขาได้ให้สัมภาษณ์ไป 5 ปี ความก้าวหน้าทางด้านนี้เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง น่าทึ่งมากทีเดียวครับ

สำหรับคลิปที่สอง ก็น่าประทับใจไม่แพ้กันครับ Speaker ก็คือ Matthew O’Reilly ผู้ที่ทำการรักษาให้กับผู้ป่วยอุบัติเหตุฉุกเฉินมานับครั้งไม่ถ้วน และเขาก็ต้องเจอกับคำถามที่ว่า “ผมกำลังจะตายใช่มั้ย” นับครั้งไม่ถ้วน ถ้าคุณรู้ว่าคนที่กำลังถามคุณกำลังจะตายจริง ๆ คุณจะพูดความจริงหรือโกหกครับ Matthew เคยทำมาแล้วทั้งสองวิธี และด้วยประสบการณ์ของเขา ทำให้รู้ว่าถ้าคน ๆ หนึ่งรู้ว่าตนกำลังจะตายในอีกไม่ช้า สิ่งที่พวกเขานึกถึงจะมีเพียง 3 แบบใหญ่ ๆ เท่านั้น เดากันได้มั้ยครับว่า ก่อนคนเราจะตาย มักมีความกังวลอะไรเหลืออยู่ ลองไปชมดูครับ


คำศัพท์ที่น่าสนใจจากคลิปที่ 1

  1. testify (v) แปลว่า ให้การเป็นพยาน พิสูจน์ รากศัพท์ก็มาจาก test + ify ซึ่งก็คือ ทำให้สามารถพิสูจน์ได้ นั่นแหละครับ

  2. depreciative (adj) คำนี้คล้ายกับคำว่า depreciatory แปลว่า การแสดงความเห็นด้านลบหรือความรู้สึกด้านลบครับ

    my students had the idea to go out to a Halloween party to forget about things, so I decided, in state of a depreciative sense of humor, to dress up like Sigmund Freud.

  3. fist (n) แปลว่า กำปั้น หรือ กำหมัด ครับ เป็น verb ก็ได้นะครับคำนี้

  4. discharge (v) แปลว่า ปล่อยออก ปลดออก ระบายออก หรือขับไล่ครับ การ discharge ประจุ ก็คือการปล่อยประจุออกจากเซลล์ไฟฟ้า เป็นต้น ครับ ถ้าเป็นภาษาทหาร ก็คงใช้คำว่า จำหน่ายออก ครับ

  1. imminent (adj) แปลว่า ซึ่งใกล้จะเกิดขึ้น ในเวลาอันใกล้ จวนเจียนจะเกิดขึ้น
  2. demise (n) แปลว่า การตาย ครับ
  3. arrest (n, v) แปลว่า การจับกุม การชะงัก หรือหยุดครับ

  4. remembrance (n) แปลว่า ความทรงจำ อนุสรณ์ การระลึกถึง รากศัพท์ก็คือ remember นั่นแหละครับ
